TAKEO, Japan (Reuters) – Torrential rains lashed out across much of Japan on Sunday, flooding streets and buildings in the west of the country, while three people were killed in a landslide in central Nagano Prefecture.

Large parts of Japan, particularly the southernmost main island of Kyushu, have seen record levels of rainfall, flooding rivers and causing landslides.

On Sunday morning, rain had stopped in much of Kyushu, even as the downpour hit Tokyo and other parts of the country.

In Takeo, a town in Saga Prefecture in Kyushu, entire streets were flooded as rescue workers in wetsuits hauled inflatables and examined the damage. Local residents carried brooms and buckets and waded knee-deep in the water.

About 113 patients at a local hospital and 69 residents of nursing homes at the same location were safely evacuated to the upper floors after the flood, the public broadcaster NHK said. Recordings from NHK showed that the hospital building and the surrounding area were flooded with water that hit the tires of cars parked in the hospital parking lot.

Three people, including a boy under 10, were without signs of life after a landslide hit a home in Okaya town, in central Nagano, NHK said.
