TikTok was probably the most downloaded and highest grossing non-game app worldwide in H1 2021
The growing importance of TikTok in the market was highlighted last week after news that ByteDance’s own app overtook YouTube in both the US and UK in average time spent per user per month on Android as of May 2021 Has.
According to a new report from the analysis company Sensor Tower, TikTok was also the most downloaded and top-selling non-game app worldwide in the first half of 2021.
According to Sensor Tower data, the app had nearly 383 million first-time installs worldwide and approximately $ 919.2 million in consumer spend in the first half of 2021.
TikTok has now also passed 3 billion installs worldwide from the entire App Store and Google Play (including the iOS version of its Chinese version Douyin and excluding third-party Android marketplaces), which is the first non-Facebook ownership, according to Sensor Tower App to achieve this.
In the US, TikTok has so far generated nearly 253 million downloads from the App Store and Google Play, accounting for 8.4% of the app’s installations worldwide.
TikTok is only the fifth non-game app to ever reach 3 billion installs worldwide via the App Store and Google Play. The other four are WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, and Instagram.
Despite the 38% year-over-year decrease in new TikTok downloads from nearly 619 million in the first half of 2020 (see below), a decrease, according to Sensor Tower, is in part due to the app’s ban in India, consumer spending (in-app spending) of $ 530.2 million up 73% in the same period last year.
Consumer spending rose to $ 534.6 million in the second quarter, from $ 384.7 million in the previous quarter (Q1 2021), which is TikTok’s largest quarterly spending growth since Q2 2020.
According to Sensor Tower, TikTok has generated more than $ 2.5 billion in consumer spend worldwide since its inception.
TikTok is one of only five non-game apps that have generated more than $ 2.5 billion in revenue, including Tinder, Netflix, YouTube, and Tencent Video, according to Sensor Tower.
Elsewhere, Sensor Tower reports that the introduction of TikTok also accelerated in the first half of 2021.
First-time downloads of the app increased 2% to 177.5 million in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter, while first-time installs in the second quarter of 2021 increased by 16% to 205.4 million compared to the previous quarter.
That second quarter growth was the strongest growth the app has seen since its record quarter of 2020 when it had more than 315 million installs, the highest growth of any app in a single quarter.
