INSIDE: See how to make DIY cupcake liners using parchment paper and a few basic tools you have around the house.
I made muffins a few weekends ago and found – after my toddler had already mashed the bananas for the batter – that I had run out of muffin cups. I didn’t want to go shopping (read: bring it to the store) anymore, so I decided to get creative and make my own DIY liners out of parchment paper.
I found help on the internet and I liked the rustic looking result so much that I’ve made muffin or cupcake tins a few times now. Here are the hacks I learned along the way.
Materials for making DIY muffin liners from parchment paper
- Muffin pan
- Cookie sheet
- Parchment paper
- Small container that fits in one of your muffin tins
Step 1: measure and cut your parchment paper
How big should your parchment paper for DIY cupcake liners be? I found that 5 × 5 inch squares work great.
With a ruler, measure 5 inches from the end of your parchment paper roll (towards the box) and make a small mark on the paper. Do the same thing on the other side.
My parchment paper was 15 inches wide so I couldn’t use my 12 inch ruler to draw a straight line all the way. Instead, I grabbed a baking sheet to use as a straight edge, but you can use anything that’s lying around and longer than the width of your parchment. Just trace the edge of your item so you can get a nice, clean line across your paper.
Now you’ve measured one side of your squares. Use the ruler to divide your rectangle into three separate 5 “by 5” squares. You can use the ruler or baking sheet as a ruler again.
Repeat the process three times so that you end up with four rows of three squares each.
Now use your scissors to cut out your liner. You will receive 12 5X5 inch squares.
Step 2: shape your parchment paper around the top of a small can
Next, shape your molds using a round container that fits into one of your muffin tins. I’ve seen people use those tiny cans of tomato paste or tomato juice. I found my spice jars worked just as well and were easy to grab right in the kitchen.
Place one of your parchment paper squares, curly side down, on top of your can / container. Center the lid in the middle of the square.
Then fold the paper tightly around the container by hand.
Run your fingernail around the lid and along the sides of the can to reinforce the creases in the parchment paper.
Step 3: place your parchment paper liner in your muffin pan
Turn the container upside down and place your liner in one of the indentations in your muffin pan. Pick up the container and repeat the folding / creasing process until all of your muffin or cupcake liners are in the mold.
Step 4: fill your liner with muffin or cupcake batter, bake and enjoy
Now fill your molds with your muffin or cupcake batter and bake according to your recipe. Let your baked goods cool in the muffin pan for a few minutes, put them on a rack and finally enjoy!
Step 5: compost your used DIY muffin liners
If your area is compost recycling or you do your own composting at home, you can put your DIY parchment paper liners in your compost bin. Just shred them up with scissors to give the decomposition process a head start.
