Sherry Tan joins Warner Music Group as its head of recorded music enterprise in Mainland China
Sherry Tan has been selected by the Warner Music Group to lead the phonograms business in mainland China.
Tan will be based in Beijing and report to Jonathan Serbin, CEO of Warner Music Greater China.
Serbin took over the position of CEO in November 2020 after Andy Ma, the former CEO of Warner Music Greater China, left his position just seven months after taking office.
Warner Music China is home to a wide variety of artists including Tia Ray, Kelly Yu, Fiona Sit, Vava, and Lizzy Wang.
She is moving to Warner Music from Mengxing Media, a start-up that she co-founded and which looked after entertainment characters such as singer and actor Kris Wu and TV director Zhang Li.
Mengxing Media also co-produced entertainment shows such as The Voice and Tmall Double Eleven Gala 2020.
As CEO of Mengxing Media, Tan taught masterclasses for Chinese entertainment company executives to learn from American producers working on TV shows like House Of Cards and The Voice.
The company was also involved in licensing the rights to films and entertainment shows for import and export from China.
Tan began working in the music industry after joining Sony Music in New York in 2005. She started out as coordinator of the international marketing department before moving to Beijing, where she was promoted to director in 2007.
While at Sony, Tan played a role in the Asian campaigns for artists such as Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne, Celine Dion and Leona Lewis.
In 2009, she moved to Fremantle Media, where Tan worked as production director for the TV content department, working on shows such as China’s Got Talent, Chinese Idol and X Factor.
She then moved to the Creative Artists Agency China, where she headed a team of agents as a TV and Digital Content Executive and worked with names such as Danial Wu, Karen Mok, Kris Wu, Leehom Wang and Tang Wei.
