Kobalt’s Chief Advertising Officer, Ryan Wright, leaves firm after seven years


Ryan Wright, Kobalt’s senior marketing director, has left the music company to start a new creative startup, MBW has confirmed.

Wright is leaving his role as Chief Marketing Officer at Kobalt, which he joined in late 2013.

At Kobalt, Wright led marketing for Kobalt’s core music publisher alongside AWAL, the independent sales and service platform Sony Music recently used for a $ 430 million acquisition. (The takeover of AWAL by Sony has been agreed, but has not yet been completed due to the usual regulatory procedures.)

New York-based Wright was an integral part of AWAL, which blew the music industry history and led the commercialization of the business before and after a $ 150 million investment by Cobalt in 2018.

This meant Wright had the difficult task of getting the music industry used to a new acronym for AWAL – A World Artists Love – after the original acronym Artists Without A Label was dropped. (Probably the best considering it will later be taken over by a major record company.)

Confirming Wright’s departure to MBW, Willard Ahdritz, Founder and Chairman of Kobalt, stated, “I worked with Ryan as CMO for seven years. He played a key role in the development of the Kobalt and AWAL brands. His passion for our mission is second to none and we will miss him.

“We wish him all the best and are delighted that he is launching his own creative brand outside of the music industry.”

Prior to joining Kobalt in 2013, Wright was SVP, Global Marketing at Sony Music. He started his career with Samsung in Seoul, Korea in 1997 before moving to Jive Records from Singapore to oversee the Asia Pacific region.

Following the agreement to sell AWAL, Kobalt will continue to operate its $ 500 million per year music publishing company and manage investments for funds looking to acquire music rights through Kobalt Capital.

Earlier this month, Kobalt saw 16 of his songwriters pick up 16 gongs at the 2021 ASCAP Pop Awards.
