China criticises NBC Olympics broadcast for ‘incomplete map’ By Reuters

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China criticized NBC Universal for showing an “incomplete map” of the country in its broadcast of the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony after a map displayed during the arrival of Chinese athletes did not include either Taiwan or that South China Sea contained.

The Chinese Consulate in New York said on Saturday in a post on its official Weibo (NASDAQ 🙂 social media platform that the ad “offends the dignity and emotions of the Chinese people”.

Comcast-owned NBC, which holds the U.S. broadcast rights to the Olympics, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comments sent through its official contact page.

The Chinese consulate did not state why it objected to the card, but said, “We urge NBC to recognize the seriousness of this problem and take action to correct the error.”

China’s state-controlled newspaper Global Times also criticized the Olympic broadcast and the display of the card.

Maps’ references to self-governing Taiwan and the controversial South China Sea have sparked controversy in recent years.

Two years ago, US retailer Gap Inc (NYSE 🙂 apologized for selling a t-shirt with a fake China card. A picture posted on social media revealed that the shirt did not contain either Taiwan Island or the South China Sea.
