(Reuters) -Amazon.com Inc told Reuters on Tuesday that it is extending until further notice a moratorium it imposed last year on police use of its facial recognition software.

The company imposed the moratorium for a year in June 2020 at the height of protests in the United States against police brutality against people of color sparked by the murder of the black George Floyd during an arrest in Minnesota.

The moratorium followed a year-long battle between the world’s largest online retailer and civil liberties advocates warning that inaccurate matches could lead to unfair arrests.

The company, whose cloud computing department Amazon (NASDAQ 🙂 offers web services with the face-matching software known as Rekognition, did not comment on Tuesday about the reason for extending the moratorium.

Last year it had hoped that Congress would put rules in place to ensure the ethical use of the technology. Congress held hearings on the matter, but no such law came into existence.
