Songtradr has confirmed the acquisition of Pretzel (aka Pretzel Rocks), a platform that “streams safe” music to live streamers on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube.

These live streams need to be very careful about playing licensed music through services like Spotify when recording their videos. This is likely to result in DMCA removing their content or being stung by YouTube’s content ID.

Instead, Pretzel is licensed directly by its artists to make their music available for such content without livestreams having to worry about a DMCA / Content ID being switched off.

Unlike traditional license fees, Pretzel pays these artists 70% of their net subscription income – money generated by live streamers who sign up for the service’s premium features.

When you consider that over the past month nearly 10 million individual streamers have broadcast content on Twitch, it’s not difficult to see how an emerging market is opening up for music that has fewer licensing barriers than traditional music industry releases.

It’s a market that Epidemic Sound has focused on, valued at $ 1.4 billion. And now it’s one that SongTradr is making a serious investment in.
