Main Wave buys catalog of Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard in ‘multi-million-dollar deal’

Primary Wave Music has signed a catalog purchase agreement with Grammy-nominated songwriter, producer and longtime Madonna employee Patrick Leonard.

The deal provides for the company to acquire its rights to its music publishers and music catalogs, as well as its master royalties as a producer.

What Primary Wave describes as a “multi-million dollar deal” includes Leonard’s part in a number of Leonard Cohen hits, such as “You want it darker, it seemed like the better way” and “If I did your love would not have “.

The deal also includes his share of songwriting royalties from his work with Madonna. The songs include some of their # 1 hits like La Isla Bonita, Frozen, and the classic Like A Prayer.

The deal follows on from Primary Wave Music Publishing’s acquisition of a majority stake in the 1990s UK R&B star Mark Morrison’s music publishing catalog last month.

In February, Primary Wave signed a takeover agreement with Wilson Phillips members Chynna Phillips and Carnie Wilson.

Primary Wave also acquired legendary Sun Records in January.

Leonard is also an accomplished producer who has worked with a number of award-winning singers throughout his career, including Roger Waters, Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Jewel, Fleetwood Mac, and many others.

Primary Wave says the deal will result in “go-forward deals” being made with Leonard to manage his release and distribute his masters across all future projects.

In addition, Leonard will now also have access to its marketing team and publishing infrastructure, which includes digital strategy, licensing, dubbing capabilities, and film, television and theater production.

Patrick Leonard, a Los Angeles-based songwriter, producer, keyboardist, and film composer has worked with artists such as Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart, Juwel, Robbie Robertson, Leonard Cohen, and others.

However, he is probably best known for his longstanding association with Madonna.

His work with the singer includes her albums True Blue, Who’s That Girl, Like a Prayer, I’m Breathless and Ray of Light.

He also directed Madonna’s 2008 documentary I Am Because We Are, played her keyboard on Live Aid in 1985, and was both musical director and keyboardist on the singer’s The Virgin Tour and the singer’s Who’s That Girl World Tour.

Leonard’s Soundtrack production credits include the films Moulin Rouge, Shrek, Legal Blonde and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

As a performer, Patrick was a founding member and main songwriter of the progressive pop studio band Toy Matinee from the early 1990s.

He also founded his own label Unitone, through which he released his own original music. The 1997 album Rivers was his first offering. This album was reissued and distributed by Rounder Records in 2000.

“When I met Larry and Adam and the amazing team at Primary Wave, it was clear that it was about music and opportunity.”

Patrick Leonard said, “Some time ago, when I was making several albums a year, there was a group of people I worked and worked for, on whom I was both dependent and respected.

“It was a bit like being with an extended family and since then there has really been nothing like it. When I met Larry and Adam and the amazing team at Primary Wave, it was clear that it was about music and opportunity.

“It was almost shocking and immediately reminded me of the years that have been so productive for me. In all honesty, I couldn’t wait to join their vision. “

“I am very happy to welcome Patrick Leonard to Primary Wave, as he fits in perfectly with our artist family.”
