Universal Music Canada (UMC) has named multi-platinum artist and producer Cardinal Offishall (Jason Drew Harrow) as senior vice president of A&R.
He reports to Jeffrey Remedios, Chairman & CEO of Universal Music Canada.
A joint venture deal with British producer Harmony Samuels (Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, Usher, Maroon 5, Ella Mai) and an as yet unannounced label imprint (which will come out later this spring) are the latest in a number of major UMC projects overseen by Offishall.
According to UMC, in the new role, Offishall will continue to discover, sign and develop artists, forge new creative partnerships and provide strategic directions.
Offishall works closely with the company’s newly created urban marketing team, led by industry veteran Craig ‘Big C’ Mannix. At the same time he continues his role as chairman of the BLACK Label Coalition (BLC) of UMC and Canada’s representative in the Task Force for Meaningful Change of the Universal Music Group.
“This promotion underscores our ambition – Canada is full of talent and we are determined to build the best possible team to put that talent first and put it on a global stage.”
Jeffrey Remedios, Universal Music Canada
Jeffrey Remedios, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Canada, said, “Kardi is a force. He is a groundbreaking, internationally recognized artist, a shrewd and insightful label manager, a compassionate and courageous thought leader, and a tireless philanthropist.
“He has always been at the forefront of the Canadian music scene and the artists and team at UMC have long benefited from his thoughtful collaboration, unmatched energy and dedication.
“This promotion underscores our ambition – Canada is full of talent and we are determined to build the best possible team to put that talent first and put it on a global stage. I am honored to continue to stand by Kardi’s side. “
“I am proud to make progress with Jeffrey Remedios, who has placed great responsibility in my hands as CEO.”
Cardinal Offishall said, “Whether on purpose or the by-product of hard work and excellence, I could stand on the shoulders of giants who came before me.
“I’ve seen the world several times and I can dream with my eyes open because the bar has been raised again and again by those brave enough to raise it to invisible heights.
“In this new position as Senior Vice President, A&R, at Universal Music Canada, the key is to further prepare my shoulders so that many others can stand taller than me and have the opportunity to showcase their gifts on a global stage.
“Where I’m from, the phrase ‘Dare to dream’ is a real warning, because without perseverance and an uncanny ability to navigate through many storms, you can end up picking up on the pieces of broken promises and regrets forever.
“I am proud to make progress with Jeffrey Remedios, who as CEO has placed great responsibility in my hands. Today I go so that the next generation can run. Moving forward forever until we all fly. “Music business worldwide
