(Reuters) -Amazon.com Inc’s closely watched union elections in Alabama had a turnout of around 55% and public voting is expected to begin as early as Thursday afternoon, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) said in a statement.
More than 3,200 postal ballots were received by the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in an election open to more than 5,800 workers in the Amazon (NASDAQ 🙂 warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama, the union said. Workers are voting on whether to join RWDSU and unionize their warehouse as the first Amazon plant in the US.
According to RWDSU, hundreds of ballots were challenged “mainly by the employer”. Ballot papers can be challenged by the union, Amazon or the NLRB if they are believed to have been tampered with, fraudulent or from an ineligible worker.
Amazon and the NLRB both did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
For comparison: In 432 other postal votes from mid-March 2020 to September 2020, voter turnout was 72% according to the NLRB in a decision made last year. In almost six months prior to the COVID-19 outbreak in the US, voter turnout was 55%, according to the NLRB decision document.
The public vote count is due to begin on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning, the RWDSU said.
