(Reuters) – Four-time major champ Brooks Koepka said on Sunday that he felt he could win the Masters despite having undergone surgery on his right knee less than three weeks ago.
Koepka dislocated his kneecap early last month and sustained ligament damage. He was operated on on March 16.
“If I had known I was going to finish second, I would not have shown up,” Koepka told reporters at Augusta National, where he got some practice in front of the major. “I feel like I can win. I’ll play … I’m fine.”
The 30-year-old former No. 1 world champion, who has struggled with left knee and hip problems in the past, said he hit balls again just seven days after the operation.
He was last on February 28th at the Golf World Championships in Florida, where he finished second. He then missed the Players Championship and Honda Classic before undergoing surgery in California.
“The goal was to play against Augusta and we wanted to see if we could play … A few bad days or something like that could set you back for a while,” said Koepka.
“More than seven hours have passed each day in rehab. Between stretching my neck and knees … I’ll be living on the (rehab) table to make sure I can be comfortable and feel good . “”
The Masters starts on Thursday.
