App Annie also looked at how much time we spend on mobile devices and whether that has decreased as the 2020 bans and quarantines wore off in 2021. With that in mind, there is bad news for those who think they have their nose buried in a smartphone for hours that ends up bad for your mind, your neck, and maybe even your social life.

All of the extra time we added to our mobile usage during lockdown has basically become a habit even in mid-2021. Our average daily time spent using apps is still huge. And it has continued to increase by more than 40% compared to 2019 in countries like Russia and Turkey.

Top countries by daily use of apps:

  1. Brazil: 5.4 hours
  2. Indonesia: 5.3 hours
  3. India: 4.9 hours
  4. South Korea: 4.8 hours

  9. USA: 3.9 hours
  10. UK: 3.8 hours
  11. Russia: 3.7 hours
  12. Agentina: 3.6 hours
  13. Australia: 3.5 hours
  14. France: 3.5 hours
  15. Germany: 3.5 hours

Interestingly, there is a huge difference between the top breakout growth apps in the US and other countries around the world – especially in Europe.

“The leading breakout apps in EMEA are dominated by those directly related to the pandemic. They focus on information, vaccinations, and contact tracking, ”says App Annie. “If you look at the top breakout apps in the US (the ones with the most dramatic growth in the previous quarter), it’s noteworthy that none have a direct relationship with COVID vaccination or contact tracing.”

Relatively new apps that have seen significant growth in the US include PictureThis, which tells you the name of a plant when you take a picture of it, and Poparazzi, a social app that is specifically designed to prevent selfies.
