Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, songwriter and rapper Burna Boy has signed a worldwide deal with Kobalt Neighboring Rights (KNR).
The deal offers Burna Boy a full suite of royalties and profit maximization services on a global basis.
(Update: In an announcement earlier this week confirming the completed acquisition of KNR, Sony Music Group simply referred to the company as “neighbor rights” and dropped the “Cobalt.” A Kobalt representative confirmed the name of the Company currently still has cobalt neighbor rights.)
Damini Ogulu, born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, is better known today as Burna Boy, the Afro-Fusion singer, songwriter and performing artist.
Signed to Atlantic Records in the US and Warner Music Group internationally, as well as his own record label Spaceship Entertainment, Ogulu has worked with some of the most iconic names in modern pop, from Sia and Diddy to Sam Smith and Justin Bieber.
Multiple collaborations have earned Burna Boy kudos, both locally and internationally, including a Grammy win for best world music album, a BET Prize win, and an Edison Prize win.
Burna Boy starred on the soundtrack for Coming 2 America last spring and later released a number of his own singles.
“My music is global.”
According to Neighboring Rights, the tour dates will be announced later this fall
Burna Boy said, “My music is global and I’ve traveled all over the world. I need my collection of performance royalties to get to the point, neat, transparent, fast, not sure if anyone does better than KNR. “
“It only makes sense to target an efficient performance royalty collector with a strong international reach.”
Bose Ogulu, Burna Boy manager
Bose Ogulu, Burna Boy’s manager, said, “When you’re running an international artist whose music is constantly being played around the world, it only makes sense to partner with an efficient performance royalty collector with strong international reach … KNR. “
“Burna Boy is one of the most influential and culturally important artists who needs to be broken on a global level.”
Micheal Stinton, Cobalt Neighbor Rights
Micheal Stinton, Business Development Manager for Neighboring Rights at KNR, added: “Burna Boy is instantly recognizable and one of the most influential and culturally important artists to have achieved global success in recent years.
“From a Grammy nomination for his incredible 2019 album, African Giant, to a Grammy win for Twice As Tall in 2020, Burna Boy has also achieved global success with collaborations including Dave, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Sam Smith, Chris Martin, Jorja Smith and Jeremih, Future, YG, Justin Bieber – the list goes on!
“We appreciate the trust Burna and his entire team have placed in KNR to manage their global neighbor rights.”
Signing a contract with a world-famous artist like Burna Boy is a sign that after several months of changing the company, KNR is still ready, at least for the time being, to spend money on large signings.
In February, Sony Music agreed to pay Kobalt $ 430 million to acquire Kobalt Neighboring Rights and AWAL, a music services company that works with independent artists including Lauv, Finneas, AG Club, Girls in Red, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and works together Kleiner Simz.
After the ink dried, the Kobalt Music Group was left with two of its main divisions – Kobalt Music Publishing and the AMRA publishing collection company.Music business worldwide
