Harrison Bader hit a homer with three runs and Carlos Martinez threw eight scoreless innings on Sunday as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 to complete a three-game series sweep.

Martinez (2-4) gave up five hits and two walks on his longest outing of the year and scored three hits. Alex Reyes threw a perfect ninth place for the seventh time.

It was the third series of the Cardinals.

It was the lowest-scoring game of the three between the clubs in the series. They combined for 27 runs in the first two.

Pittsburgh lost their first series since a three-game game in Cincinnati April 5-7.

The pirate starter Wil Crowe (0-1) threw five innings and gave up the homer with three runs under three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. He and the helpers Luis Oviedo, Kyle Crick and Richard Rodriguez limited the Cardinals to four hits.

Crowe also led at the end of third place with a single to the left in first place, which he saw as a batsman in the major leagues. And at the end of fifth place he went to the plate and took a run-up walk, even though he wanted to end the game after throwing 97 fields.

Pittsburgh’s catcher Jacob Stallings got a shock in the fourth when he was hit in the face by a Martinez pitch. He received medical attention, but it turned out it was more of a fleeting blow and Stallings could stay in the game.

Bader made his season debut at the series opener on Friday after being out all year with a forearm injury.

In his first two games against Pittsburgh he was 8-1 with three spikes, a walk and a stolen base.

The rust was apparently gone by Sunday.

In the second, Paul DeJong went for a walk. Tyler O’Neill’s single pushed DeJong to second place. Andrew Knizner made the choice of an outfield player, DeJong finished third.

Bader followed with a homer to the left in the center for a 3-0 lead in St. Louis.

Pittsburgh had at least one runner in each of the first six innings but couldn’t bring anyone home.
