(Reuters) – Billionaire Jeff Bezos’ rocket company, Blue Origin, announced $ 2 million as the current highest bid for a seat on its New Shepard starship after the startup closed the first phase of its auction.

The second phase of the auction is underway and will last until June 10th. The final phase of the process will be a live online auction on June 12th. (www.blueorigin.com)

The rocket company plans on July 20 for its first suborbital tour of its spacecraft, a milestone in a competition to usher in a new era in private commercial space travel.

The New Shepard rocket-capsule combination was developed to autonomously fly six passengers more than 100 km above the earth into suborbital space.

Reuters reported in 2018 that Blue Origin plans to bill passengers at least $ 200,000 for the ride, based on an evaluation of Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic Holdings (NYSE 🙂 Inc’s competitive plans and other considerations, though Thinking may have changed.
