DUBAI (Reuters) – Nothing says more about social distancing than Dubai’s RoboCafe, where robots have replaced their human overlords.

Customers can place their orders with robots made in Germany, which they then prepare and deliver directly to their tables.

“It’s a good idea right now,” said Emirati customer Jamal Ali Hassan, whose hot drink was delivered without spillage. “Restaurant turnout is low so I would expect this idea to be popular … you order online and the robot works in front of you and brings you anything you want in minutes.”

RoboCafe has been in the works for more than two years, but its launch has been postponed from March 2020 due to the pandemic. It finally opened last June when restrictions were eased in the United Arab Emirates.

The RoboCafe was created with the support of the Dubai Government’s Artificial Intelligence Initiative. People are only asked in the event of faults or to disinfect surfaces.

“Here the customer orders via the screen (), then everything depends on artificial intelligence. [the robot] sorts the orders by the table and places them on the small service bot, and the service bot delivers them to the customer, “said Rashid Essa Lootah, Executive Director.

Robots made in Germany make the drinks, while the fully autonomous delivery bots are designed and made in the UAE.

“I’m a bit of a tech nerd, so I see the little robots like the Roomba vacuum that delivers groceries and the various fixtures – it’s like an assembly line in an automobile factory,” said customer Vincent Marino.
