(Reuters) – Iran on Saturday executed an ethnic Baloch militant for shooting two Revolutionary Guards five years ago, the judiciary’s official news website Mizan reported.
It was said that one of the perpetrators of the 2015 operation, Abdulhamid Mir Baluchzehi, known as Owais, was “hanged this morning following legal process” in Zahedan, southeastern Sistan-Balochistan province.
Mir Baluchzehi is a key member of the Sunni extremist group Jaish al-Adl or the Army of Justice and has been charged with “armed actions against the country and membership in groups dependent on the regime”.
The impoverished Sistan-Balochistan province, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, has long been the scene of frequent clashes between security forces and Sunni militants and drug smugglers. The province’s population is predominantly Sunni Muslim, while most of Iranians are Shiite.
Jaish al-Adl, who campaigns for more rights and better living conditions for Baluchis from ethnic minorities, has assumed responsibility for several attacks on Iranian security forces in the province in recent years.
