TOKYO (Reuters) – A panel from Japan’s Ministry of Health said Friday that people 65 and over should be given priority vaccination against COVID-19 as the government sets guidelines that also prioritize frontline health workers and those with illness .

The panel also specified, among other things, chronic heart disease, chronic respiratory disease and chronic kidney disease as underlying diseases that should determine the priority of the vaccine.

The recommendations would include 36 million elderly people and 8.2 million people with conditions in the first group to receive vaccination shots.

Another government body this week recommended that priority be given to health professionals and workers in elderly care facilities, while older people and those with underlying health conditions should also be given priority.

Japan, of 126 million people, has made agreements to buy 290 million doses of vaccine from Pfizer Inc (NYSE :), AstraZeneca (NASDAQ 🙂 Plc and Modern (NASDAQ 🙂 Inc or enough for 145 million people.

Japan is currently facing a third wave of coronavirus infections that are putting a heavy strain on the country’s medical system.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will hold a press conference on Friday on the government’s response to the pandemic.
